This is a very traditional salad served frequently in many North Indian homes during the winter months when Moolies are abundant. It is eaten only in small quantities, almost like a pickle.

Ingredients

  • 1 white radish, peeled and grated*

  • 2 inch piece of ginger peeled and coarsely grated or finely chopped or thinly shredded*

  • 2-4 green chillies, finely chopped/sliced*

  • 1/4 tsp. chilli powder (optional)

  • 1-2 firm red tomatoes, deseeded and chopped

  • Juice of 1 lemon or lime

  • Salt/pepper to taste.

  • Optional extras

  • 1 small to medium tomato, de-seeded and finely chopped or 2 tbsp. chopped red pepper (capsicum or bell pepper)

  • * Quantities of these ingredients are only approximate and can vary according to availability and your choice. Any of the 3 main ingredients can be omitted.

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly but gently.

  2. Serve cold.

Notes

  • If you store it in a fridge, keep it in an airtight jar or everything will smell of radishes.
