Charnamrit - 2, A Sweet drink offering given after Hindu Prayers

The word Charnamrit is made of two words, charan=feet & Amrit=mythological nectar from Gods. It is supposed to makes one Amar or live for ever, the soul and not the human body. Actual translation of the word Charnamrit is “The nectar from the feet of God”.

It is offered at the end of certain Hindu prayer meetings in temples and at home,. You only need a tablespoonful per person.

This amount will be enough for 25-30 people.

Ingredients

  • 500 ml or 1 pint chilled milk

  • 500 ml chilled water

  • 1/2 cup yoghurt or dahi

  • 3 tbsp. sugar. Use sweetener for diabetics.

  • 2 tbsp. honey. Use sweetener for diabetics.

  • 1 tsp. Gangajal, holi water from the river Ganges (not absolutely essential)

  • 4-5 basil or tulsi leaves, broken into small pieces (not cut)

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients, except basil leaves, in a blender and mix for a few seconds. Take out in a 'lota', an Indian drink vessel, or a jug.

  2. Add basil leaves and chill until needed.

  3. After prayers, serve 1 dessert spoonful per person in the right cupped palm, placed above the left cupped palm (it is sipped from the palm with head bowed down), or in small earthenware cups.
