Lime/Lemon Soda

Neembu (Nimbu)-Soda

Mamta Gupta

Drink

This is a very refreshing and popular summer drink in India, served at home and in restaurants all over India. You can make it with sugar only or salt only or with both sugar and salt together, giving an excellent replacement of electrolytes lost in the intense heat of Indian summers. It is easier to use syrup, as sugar is harder to dissolve in soda water. If you do not have time to make syrup, use fine sugar, added directly to the soda. Sugar-free sweetener can be used in place of sugar/syrup. Sugar syrup can be bought ready made or made by boiling 1 1/2 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water.

Serves 2.

Ingredients

  • 1 lime or lemon (lime is better)

  • Sugar syrup to taste

  • 2 glasses soda water placed in a jug

  • Crushed ice

  • One slice of lemon

  • 1-2 mint leaves

Instructions

  1. Squeeze lime/lemon juice into the soda. Add sugar syrup to taste, spoon by spoon, tasting in between.

  2. Place some crushed ice in chilled glasses and pour the drink.

  3. Serve immediately, garnished with a slice of lemon and 1-2 mint leaves.

Notes

  • You can add a teasppon or two of ginger juice; grate ginger and squeeze out the juice.
